AslongasIcanremember,Ihavealwaysbeenacompetitiveperson.Fromsportstoacademics,Ialwaysstrivetobethebest.However,thereisoneparticularindividualwhohasalwaysmanagedtochallengemeineveryaspectofmylife.Heismybiggestrivalandalsomygreatestmotivator.Inthisstory,Iwillsharewithyoumyjourneyofupsanddownswithmyworthyopponent.
1.Itallstartedbackinelementaryschoolwhenwecompetedagainsteachotherinaspellingbee.Iwasconfidentinmyabilities,buthemanagedtobeatmebyasingleletter.IwasimpressedbutalsofrustratedthatIlosttohim.
2.Ourrivalrycontinuedthroughmiddleschoolwherewebothplayedonthebasketballteam.Webothwantedtobethestarplayer,butourcoachsawpotentialinbothofusanddecidedtomakeusco-captains.Itwasadifficultadjustmentatfirst,butwelearnedtoworktogetherandeventuallyledourteamtovictory.
3.Inhighschool,webothhadoursightssetonbecomingvaledictorian.Wewouldconstantlychallengeeachotherwithourgradesandstudyhabits.However,intheend,heendedupwiththehighestGPAanddeliveredthevaledictorianspeechatgraduation.
4.Ourrivalryevencontinuedintocollegewherewebothappliedtothesameprogramandeventuallygotaccepted.Wewerealwayspushingeachothertodobetterandachievemore.
5.However,duringoursecondyearincollege,thingstookaturnfortheworse.Webothappliedforthesameinternship,andIendedupgettingitinsteadofhim.Hewasfuriousandaccusedmeofsabotaginghischances.
6.Ourfriendshipdeterioratedafterthatincident,andwestoppedtalkingforafewyears.Itwasn'tuntilwebothattendedourhighschoolreunionthatwefinallyhadachancetocatchup.
7.Wetalkedaboutourpastandourcompetitivenature.Webothrealizedthatourrivalryhadblindedusfromseeingthebiggerpicture,whichwastosupporteachotherandgrowtogether.
8.Afterthatnight,westartedtorebuildourfriendshipandevenstartedcollaboratingonsomeprojects.Itwasrefreshingtohavesomeonewhounderstoodmydriveandcouldhelpmeimprove.
9.Itwasn'tuntilwebothappliedforthesamejobthatourrivalryreallypushedustothelimit.Webothwantedthejob,andwebothhadthequalificationsforit.
10.Thecompetitionwasfierce,butintheend,heendedupgettingthejob.Iwasdevastated,butIknewthathedeserveditjustasmuchasIdid.
11.Seeinghimsucceedmademerealizethatourrivalrywasnotaboutwinningorlosingbutaboutpushingeachothertobethebestversionsofourselves.
12.Overtheyears,wecontinuedtosupporteachother'sdreamsandaccomplishments.Wewouldstillcompetefromtimetotime,butitwasalwaysingoodfunandwithasenseofcamaraderie.
13.Lookingback,Irealizedthatmyworthyopponentwasnotjustsomeonewhochallengedmebutsomeonewhohelpedmegrowandbecomeabetterperson.
14.Ourrivalrytaughtmetheimportanceofresilience,perseverance,andhumility.Italsoshowedmethatsometimes,thepersonyouseeasyourbiggestcompetitioncanalsobeyourgreatestally.
15.ThelessonsIlearnedfrommyrivalhavestayedwithmethroughoutmylifeandhavehelpedmeachievesuccessinmycareerandpersonallife.
16.Iamforevergratefulformyworthyopponentandtheimpacthehashadonmylife.
17.Intheend,itwasn'taboutwinningorlosingbutaboutthejourneywetooktogetherandthegrowthweexperiencedalongtheway.
